How to Create an Open Source Website
"Open source" is a concept that refers to a project's source code being publicly available so that the project's community of users can themselves modify, improve and often even redistribute the original. The concept is very popular online, where you can find open source software to browse the web, play games, manage email, write documents, and much more. It's very possible (not to mention cheap) to create a website built entirely from open source software.

1
Buy a domain name and a web hosting plan. When choosing a web host, choose a plan that will run your website on an open source server (such as Apache or LightTPD) and an open source operating system (such as Linux or Free BSD). Also make sure that any databases included in your hosting plan are run with an open source database manager, such as MySQL or SQLite.

2
Download an open source content management system and install it on your server. A content management system (CMS) is a program that provides you with a full-blown user interface for managing your site, including adding new content and changing the design. Many open source CMSs exist, including Drupal, Joomla, PHP-Nuke, WordPress, and Limny.

Maintain your site with the open source spirit. Promote open source projects. Offer the source code of your site's design to your visitors for free. If you're a developer, release the code to any applications you build or enlist your site's community to help build them.
