How to Study for Concealed Weapon Permit

In order for citizens to legally carry a concealed weapon, they must pass certain tests to obtain a permit. As of early 2010, 48 states allow residents to apply for a concealed weapon license. While specific rules and regulations may differ from state to state (Wisconsin, for instance, allows the open carry of firearms in most situations), core permit requirements and testing materials are maintained by federal law and remain consistent across the country.

Instructions

1. Contact the law enforcement division of your state to determine your eligibility for a concealed carry permit. Inquire as to whether you fulfill your state's age, citizenship and competency requirements to apply for the permit. Request information about local concealed weapon courses, such as facilities and dates and times.

2. Enroll in your local concealed carry course and attend each of the classes. Record notes on all topics that will be covered in the permit test, including firearm mechanics and terminology, liability issues, concealed carry legislation and limitations, carry methods and safety, home defense, gun-handling techniques and methods for managing and defusing confrontational situations.

3. Set aside an hour each day to study your notes as well as the course materials handed out in class. Bring your study materials with you throughout your day and read them during lunch or any breaks you may have during your free time.

4. Acquire additional study materials in the form of books or instructional videos on gun handling and concealed carry legislation. Ensure that you are familiar with all up-to-date regulations that will be included on the test.

5. Practice any practical components on the use of firearms required by your state. Attend your local shooting range with your desired firearm and practice to increase your accuracy for the competency portion of your concealed carry test. Schedule regular training sessions until you are confident in your ability to demonstrate proficiency and safety with a firearm.
