All activity on Microsoft Windows starts from the desktop. Windows makes it easy to find commonly used utilities by placing them on the desktop by default. It also allows users to customize the desktop, setting the screen size and wallpaper to match their preferences. Over time, however, the look and functionality of the desktop can change as users change settings or disable features. Thankfully, fixing the Windows desktop and restoring it to your preferred appearance is easily achieved in all Windows versions.

Instructions

  1. Fix the desktop in Windows XP and earlier Windows versions

      Right-click in a blank area on the desktop and select "Properties."

      Click the "Desktop" tab on the Display Properties dialog box. Choose your desired background color, background image, and background image position using the options presented on-screen. Additionally, click the "Customize Desktop" button to adjust the icons that appear on your desktop. Click "OK" after confirming your choices.

      Click the "Settings" tab. Locate the section labeled "Screen resolution" and move the slider to the left and right to adjust the size of your desktop.

      Confirm all of your changes by clicking the "Apply" button at the bottom of the dialog box and then clicking "OK."

    Fix the desktop in Windows Vista or Windows 7

      Right-click in a blank area on the desktop and select "Personalize."

      Click the "Change Desktop Icons" item in the Tasks menu on the left-hand side of the Personalization dialog box. Select the icons you want to show or hide from your desktop, and then click "Apply," followed by the "OK" button.

      Click the "Desktop Background" item on the right-hand side of the Personalization dialog box. Select your desired background image, set its positioning, and then click "OK" to confirm the changes.

      Click the "Display Settings" item at the bottom of the right-hand side of the Personalization dialog box. Locate the section labeled "Resolution" and move the slider to the left and right to adjust the size of your desktop.

      Adjust the size and style of your desktop icons by right-clicking in a blank area on the desktop and selecting "View." Choose from Large, Medium, or Classic style options.
