How to Repair a Web Chaise

Webbing is a common method for making seats and backs for lawn and beach chairs. A web chaise is a type of webbed beach or lawn chair that is long, giving you plenty of room to stretch out and prop up your legs. This type of chair usually has a back that can recline. Webbing can also be used inside a chair, where it forms a hidden support or the base for a detachable cushion. If any of the webbing strips wear out, they can be replaced. An easy way to give chairs a face-lift is to replace all their webbing. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the chair to determine how the webbing is attached. If it's a metal lawn chair, the webbing is likely attached with screws. If the chair is wood, it's probably stapled on.

    • 2

Remove any old webbing and the hardware holding it in place. If some of the webbing is still in good shape, replace only the damaged webbing and leave the rest in place.

    • 3

Staple or screw in webbing, starting in the middle of the chair back. Fold the end over and staple or screw through two thicknesses for added stability.

    • 4

Stretch the webbing over the top and around to the bottom of the front of the chair using your web stretcher. If it's a folding chair, try folding it before you secure the first strip to make sure you don't stretch it too tightly for the folding mechanism to work. Secure the webbing by stapling or screwing, then cut the webbing.

    • 5

Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the rest of the front-to-back strips.

    • 6

Feed the webbing through from one side, over one strip and under the next. Do this as close to the middle of the chair as possible. Secure one end to one side of the chair.

    • 7

Stretch the strip across and around the frame and secure it underneath. Cut the webbing.

    • 8

Repeat steps 6 and 7 for the rest of the side-to-side strips.

    • 9

Measure, cut and replace any padding and fabric that might have been hiding the webbing. Attach it the same way the original fabric was attached.
