How to Build Cedar Log Beds
Bring part of the great outdoors into the bedroom so your rustic experience at camp still accompanies you while you sleep. Cedar is a very aromatic wood that is light, easy to work with and holds up well to long use, moisture and insects. This is why many people choose cedar log beds for their camp. While the cost of most cedar log beds range as much as a few hundred dollars, a modest design can provide a twin bed frame for less than a $100. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 4 4-by-76-inch cedar poles
- 2-inch hole punch

- 4 4-by-40-inch cedar poles
- 4 4-by-36-inch cedar poles
- 2-inch drill bit

1
With your hole punch, drill 2 inches into the center of each end of the 76-inch cedar poles. Using your hand saw, cut around the pole 2 inches from the end, on both ends of every 76 inch pole. This should leave a 2-inch-long cylinder that is 2 inches in diameter. Repeat this process with the four 40-inch cedar poles.

2
To construct the bed posts, take the 2-inch drill bit, the 36 inch poles and drill a 2-inch deep hole 1 foot from each end of the pole. Make sure the two holes on each pole are on the same side, and the centers are 1 foot apart.

Measuring 6 inches from each end of two 40-inch poles, drill a 2-inch-deep hole, again, making sure these holes are all on the same side. Measure 8 inches from these holes, and drill two more in each of the two poles. There should be four holes on the same side in two of the 40-inch poles.

Stand two bed posts on end with the holes facing each other and insert the one 40-inch pole with the four holes in it 1 foot from the floor, and another 40-inch pole with no holes in it 1 foot from the top. Make sure the holes on the 40-inch pole are parallel with the floor so that the 72-inch poles can be inserted, connecting both ends. Repeat this process with the remaining 40-inch and 36-inch poles, and secure by screwing through the sides of the poles into the 2-inch inserts. Two screws should be used for each insert.
-
5
Insert the last four 72-inch poles into the holes of the bottom 40-inch poles, securing them with the screws.
