How to Train to Be a Six Sigma Black Belt
Six Sigma is a popular business management technique that focuses on delegating responsibilities to team members based on their training--in the form of "belts," similar to the martial arts. A Six Sigma black belt acts as a team leader for projects, mentored by a Six Sigma master black belt. Training for a Six Sigma black belt is a commitment--the course will be at least four weeks of intensive study and involves the completion of a project.

1
Identify Six Sigma courses in your area. A number of consulting firms offer training in the concepts of Six Sigma, as well as certification programs. However, there is no standard certification process, so you need to be careful when selecting a program, as some programs will be better than others. If possible, look for a course sponsored by the American Society for Quality or the Institute of Industrial Engineers.

2
Register for the course and pay course fees. Once you've decided on a course, fill out the registration form and pay the associated fees.

3
Attend Six Sigma black belt training classes. Your training program should last about four to six weeks of full-time study. In these courses, you will learn how to analyze project data, control the project and manage your team, in addition to many other Six Sigma concepts.

4
Complete a project using Six Sigma concepts. An important part of the training process is getting hands-on experience using Six Sigma. You can implement the concepts into your work with the guidance of a current Six Sigma master black belt--someone who has extensive Six Sigma experience.

5
Review material to pass the exam. The Six Sigma training program will culminate in an exam that will give you Six Sigma certification as a black belt. Review your notes before taking the exam so that you can be sure to pass.

Tips & Warnings
Some companies will do on-site training if you want to convert your entire office to Six Sigma principles. The company can also tailor the training program specifically to your company's needs.
There are some Six Sigma training courses that focus on a specific industry, such as health care. If you can find a program that's specific for your industry, it will be more beneficial to take this kind of course.
