How To Get Mold or Mildew Out of Ducts

Mold and mildew spores can be spread to food.

Mold and mildew can be damaging. If it is inside of a duct, spores can cause more mold or mildew, and possibly some health issues if the they are inhaled. Allergic reactions, asthma and other respiratory problems have been known to occur because of mold and mildew. The odor given off by mold and mildew is unpleasant as well. For it to grow, mold requires a warm, moist and dark area. Getting rid it as soon as possible can prevent the growth of more mold or mildew. You must first clean the mold out of the duct and eliminate any moisture that may be causing the mold or mildew.

Things You'll Need

• Face mask
• Eye goggles
• Gloves
• Bleach
• Scrub brush
• Rag
• Cloth

Instructions

1. Wear protective clothing. A face mask, protective eye goggles, gloves and old clothes that can be tossed out afterward are all things you should wear when getting rid of mildew. Protection can prevent any mildew or spores from getting into your eyes and lungs.

2. Open the duct. After opening the duct, spray the affected area with bleach. This helps prevent any spores from becoming airborne and it will soften the mold or mildew and make it easier to remove.

3. Wait a few minutes and proceed by scrubbing the area with a hard scrubbing brush.

4. Rinse the duct with cold water and let the water dry. If you do not want to wait, use a rag or cloth to dry the area.

5. Repeat this procedure if any mold or mildew remains.

6. Get rid of any excess water or moisture. Fix any leaks you have in your plumbing or other sources of water that are near the duct that could be causing the mold.

7. Remove anything that may be blocking the duct and preventing air circulation.
