How to Build Your Own Portable Basketball Goal

Basketball goals are primarily known as permanent fixtures in gymnasiums and community parks and on residential garages. In many subdivisions and suburban neighborhoods, basketball goals are not allowed to be installed on garages because they disrupt the uniformity of that housing community and might reduce the market value of the houses. A unique way to bypass these restrictions so you can enjoy the game of basketball is to use a portable goal. This article will show you, step by step, how to create your own portable basketball goal.

Things You'll Need

  • basketball goal attached to backboard
  • 2 thick u rings with 5/8 holes
  • 11 foot hollow metal pole 4 inches in diameter
  • 15 to 30 gallon black garbage can on 2 wheels
  • one 80 pound bag of quick dry concrete cement
  • nuts 5/8
  • 2 assistants

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the basketball goal and backboard face down on the ground.

    • 2

Line up the 11 foot metal pole between the four screws sticking out of the back of the backboard. Measure 10 feet from the goal to the end point of the pole. If there is a foot or so left over, push the pole up until the end is exactly 10 feet from the goal.

    • 3

Install the u rings on the pole. Line them up with the screws and bolt them down with the nuts very tightly. Make sure they are so tight so that the goal cannot move at all.

    • 4

Mix your concrete mix according to instructions in a separate bucket.

    • 5

Lift the goal and pole up and place it in the garbage can. Have your two assistants hold it steady while you pour the concrete mix in the can. If one bag of concrete mix does not fill the can half-way, add more.

    • 6

Hold the goal in the middle of the can until the concrete becomes stiff. Let it sit overnight before shooting on the goal.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use an extra-thick plastic garbage can to increase the stability and longevity of the stand.
