How to Install a Honeywell Humidifier to a Furnace

Honeywell furnace humidifiers use the warm air furnace blower to send humidification around the entire house. You can optionally use a Honeywell humidity control and you can use hard, soft, hot or cold water in the humidifier, making any water supply line easy to tap. The humidifier needs to be energized during blower motor cycles so it does require a power source too. You will also need a nearby drain. However, installation isn’t difficult. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • General tools (scissors, wire cutters, pliers, snips, screwdrivers, wrenches)
  • Duct tape
  • Sheet metal screws
  • 6-inch diameter duct
  • ¼-inch copper tubing
  • ½-inch plastic drain tube

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the location of the humidifier. It should be in a location where it won’t freeze and needs to be at least 3 inches above the furnace jacket. Leave plenty of space to remove and install the humidifier cover.

    • 2

Use the included paper template to cut an opening in the furnace plenum with a pair of snips.

    • 3

Disassemble the humidifier and position the humidifier in the opening. Make sure it’s level. The lower sheet metal edge tabs must lock. Secure the humidifier housing to the opening using sheet metal screws.

    • 4

Locate the other furnace plenum and use your snips to cut an opening for the 6-inch collar. Install the collar--by bending over the metal tabs with your fingers--and a duct damper for summer shutoff if your heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system has air conditioning. The duct damper installs using the same metal tab technique.

    • 5

Install a 6-inch diameter duct from the collar to the humidifier. Push the duct onto the collar and humidifier and wrap the ends with foil tape. Attach duct straps and tighten the duct straps by pulling on them with pliers. Ducts can be cut with scissors and then use wire cutters to cut the wire reinforcement.

    • 6

Reassemble the humidifier making sure the water feed tube isn’t pinched. Hinge the cover and secure with the thumbscrew.

    • 7

Connect the wiring to the 120V side of the transformer and connect the transformer to the humidifier. If you are including a humidity control connect it to the solenoid valve. (Refer to the humidity control installation instructions.)

    • 8

Connect the water. Use the included self-piercing saddle to tap into a nearby water line. Connect the water line to the inlet side of the solenoid valve. Use compression nuts and brass ferrules on ¼-inch copper tubing.

    • 9

Connect a ½-inch drain tube to the drain fitting and run to a suitable drain.
