How to Make Flannel Jeans thumbnail
There's a style of jeans for everyone

Flannel jeans, or flannel lined jeans, are a style of jean with a thinner denim fabric that is backed with flannel. The flannel provides a softer interior layer as well as some extra warmth. While most pairs of flannel jeans sell for an average of $50 to $70 in stores, they can be made at home for a fraction of the price.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a tape measure to determine the proper measurements for the jeans. The two most important measurements are the waist and hips. Measure your waist at the point where the jeans should fall on you. Measure the fullest place on your hips. Write down these measurements.

    • 2

Select a pattern for the exact style of jeans you prefer. Keep in mind that certain types of jeans are only flattering for certain figures. For example, boot-cut or bell-bottom jeans are flattering for shorter body types, as they elongate the legs.

    • 3

Purchase the same amount for all three fabrics: the denim, flannel and interfacing. Also purchase thread to match the denim fabric. Finally, purchase the necessary notions such as a zipper and buttons.

    • 4

Lay out the various pattern pieces and place the cheap interfacing on top. Trace your exact size onto the cheap interfacing pieces and label each piece with its size, pattern details and any darts.

    • 5

Preshrink the denim and flannel by washing them in hot water and drying them in a hot drier.

    • 6

Cut out the cheap interfacing pattern with scissors and pin it to the denim fabric.

    • 7

Cut out the denim fabric pieces using the cheap interfacing pattern. Mark specifications, such as the zipper flap, directly onto the denim using the disappearing ink pen.

    • 8

Repeat step six with the flannel and the fusible interfacing.

    • 9

Sandwich the fusible interfacing between the flannel and the denim. The right sides of these fabrics should be facing outward.

    • 10

Pin the pieces together and iron them so that the interfacing fuses.

    • 11

Construct the jeans as instructed in your pattern.
