How to Hang Sweaters So They Don't Get Ruined

When you're in a hurry, it's tempting to quickly store sweaters on hangers in your closet. This is one temptation, though, that's best to resist. Most sweaters are too heavy and bulky for hangers to support. If you hang them up normally, the hangers dig into the fabric, causing unsightly shoulder bumps that are difficult to fix. You can avoid damaging your sweaters by folding them around hangers instead of hanging them up by the shoulders.

Step 1

Lay your sweater flat on a table, bed or similar flat surface. Smooth out any wrinkles with your hands.

Step 2

Fold the sweater in half lengthwise so that the sides and arms match evenly.

Step 3

Place a thick-shoulder hanger upside-down on the sweater. Position the hanger so that the hook rests in the armpit area of the sweater.

Step 4

Fold the waist of the sweater up and over one side of the hanger.

Step 5

Fold both sleeves over the other side of the hanger. Lift the sweater and hanger by the hook. This method secures the sweater, so it won't fall off the hanger.

Step 6

Hang the sweater in your closet or on a garment rack.
