How to Replace a Dell M140 LCD Inverter
If you own a Dell M140 laptop and the screen is dimming or is not able to be viewed at all because it is so dark, the screen might not be the problem. It may be the inverter, which is inside a laptop and supplies power to the backlight. If the inverter dies or is in the process of dying, power won't be supplied to the backlight and dimming will occur.

1
Unplug your Dell M140 laptop from its power source, and remove the battery pack.
-
2
Find the four screws that hold the front bezel of the laptop screen to the screen assembly. They will be in the four corners of the front bezel covered by rubber screw covers. Use your small knife to pop the screw covers out.
-
-
3
Unscrew the screws holding the front bezel in place by using you small Philips screwdriver.
-
4
Place your fingers between the front bezel and the LCD screen, and gently unsnap the front bezel from the screen assembly. Work your way slowly around the perimeter until the front bezel is completely removed.
-
5
Lift the LCD screen out of the screen assembly and place it LCD-side down on your keyboard.
-
6
Unplug the wires that go into the inverter. The inverter can be found at the bottom of the screen assembly underneath where the screen was in place. Two wires go into the inverter. One goes to the backlight, while the other goes to the video card.
-
7
Remove the faulty inverter from the screen assembly. It is held in place by a piece of tape. Simply pull the tape off.
-
8
Look at the back of the inverter for the model number and serial number. This will make it much easier to order a replacement.
-
9
Reconnect the video card wire and the backlight wire to the new inverter and place the new inverter inside the screen assembly using the tape that held the original in place. You can also buy this tape from computer parts retailers if you need more.
-
10
Place the screen back in the screen assembly.
-
11
Snap the front bezel back on.
-
12
Put the screws back in place in the front bezel.
-
13
Replace the screw covers into the front bezel.
