Prove your English ability and prepare for your future.

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) tests your ability to communicate in English if English is not your native tongue or first language. Specifically, the TOEFL is designed to test whether your English competency is adequate for you to be successful at the university level, especially if you were to attend a primarily English-speaking campus. The TOEFL is the most widely accepted English language test in the world and more than 7,000 locations either accept or require it for admittance.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide if you are going to take the paper-based test or test via the Internet. Visit the ETS (Educational Testing Services) website to learn the different options available to you in your current location. Choose whether you will register online, by phone, by mail or by walk-in and follow the appropriate step below.

    • 2

Register online at the site by entering your country, selecting a testing center that is convenient for you and paying your fees via credit card. Spell your name exactly as it will appear on your test on your testing day so that there is no confusion.

    • 3

Register by phone by calling your regional test center, which can be found via the ETS site (and on the References section of this article). Be prepared to provide all of your contact information as this will be necessary for completing your registration form. Pay your fees via credit card.

    • 4

Register by mail by downloading, printing and completing the registration form from the ETS TOEFL website. Pay via credit card, check, Euro check or money order. Do not send cash.

    • 5

Register by walk-in at a TOEFL resource center if there is one available in your area. Check the list of TOEFL resource centers in the References section of this article. Some resource centers will allow you to pay your test fees in local currency, eliminating the need for a credit card, check or money order.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure that you plan for your test in advance. There are financial penalties for late registration or cancellation.

  • If you are registering by mail, all of your forms and fees must be received at least four weeks before your testing date to ensure time to process your paperwork. If you have not received any kind of word or confirmation in response to your mailed registration, call the center where you mailed your paperwork at least three days in advance of your deadline.
