How to Enable Adobe Document Rights

Adobe Acrobat PDF writers allow you to create interactive forms that can be distributed, filled out and returned to you using the Portable Document Format. Because many people open and view PDFs through Adobe Reader rather than Acrobat, it's wise to first enable extended document rights in Acrobat before sending out your form. These rights give other users the ability to fill out your form and save a copy that includes the data they entered.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open Adobe Acrobat.

    • 2

Open the PDF for which you want to enable user rights by selecting “Open” from the File menu. Navigate to the document's location, click on the document name, and click once on the “Open” button.

    • 3

Return to the File menu and choose "Save As," then "Reader Extended PDF," then "Enable Additional Features."

    • 4

Select a location for the rights-enabled PDF. Although Acrobat automatically selects the folder where the source document was located, you may choose an alternate folder. Acrobat also populates the “File name” field with the name of the source document. To distinguish between the original document and the rights-enabled document, type a different file name into the field. Click on the “Save” button to save the PDF.

Tips & Warnings

  • Acrobat programs are costly, so you might want to try Adobe's free trial version, which is fully functional.
