There is a lot of buzz going around by children and disciplining methods. Many people think that spanking is abusive and may lead to the children having mental or emotional scars latter in life. This debate has been going on for over 30 years. However, not spanking at all has led to children being openly rude towards their parents and not following the rules.

Children need to learn right from wrong. Disciplining is how we help the child form into a well rounded adult who knows right from wrong.

Children tend to behave and respond better to time outs and warnings when they know that last straw is going to be a spanking. A spanking is a swat or two to the child's behind. Matter of fact, there is a passage in the bible from Genesis that says the rod will help deliver the child from evil. Please note that there is a big difference between beating and spanking. Beating up a child is wrong and against the law. However a spanking may be needed as a last resort to make the child listen and follow the rules. Here is how to effectively discipline with spanking.

1. Clearly state the rules with the child. The child needs to know and understand the rules so they know what they can and can not do.

   If you are going into a store and the kids usually act up in; take the time to let them know what the rules will be before going inside.

2. Verbal warning should be given. This gives the child the chance to learn and correct from their mistake.

   Again clearly tell them what they did that was wrong and if needed remind them of the consequences.

3. Make the child take a time out or take away some privileges. This is about spanking yes, but spanking is a last resort when the child refuses to listen.

4. One or two good swat(s) to the child behind will make them behave and not forget this rule they are breaking.

5. Let the child know you love them enough to spank them and make sure they understand what they did that deserved the spanking.

• A spanking may become the first reaction if the child is doing something dangerous like trying to run out into traffic.

• Leaving bruises is abuse and should not happen. Bruises are discoloration of the skin that does not go away in a few minutes.

• Use self control. If you lose your temper and can't control yourself, give yourself a time out with the child in a safe place.
