Making Your Gift Box Pattern
-
1
Select your card stock and weight. Make sure you select a medium that can be easily cut, scored and folded. It is also important for your card stock to be sturdy enough to carry the items you are wrapping. Often when a gift has significant weight and the proper box is not chosen, the gift appears awkwardly wrapped.
-
2
Measure the width, height, depth (if applicable) and length of your gift. For a rectangular gift box, make your paper pattern 15 1/2 inches wide by 20 1/2 inches in length. Cut your pattern.
It is best to make the score dimension lines mentioned in the following steps onto this paper pattern for future gift boxes and reference. The depth of the box will appear once the sides have been scored and folded. Make sure your pencil markings are light enough that when you cut along the outline, your box will not show visible pencil lines.

3
Trace your paper pattern onto two separate pieces of card stock. One pattern panel will be the top and the second pattern panel will be for the bottom of your box. Cut two pieces.
-
4
Mark one panel 1 1/4 inches all around. You will have a smaller rectangular box within your panel. Do not cut. This the your first score line. Take your second panel and repeat using the same measurements.
-
5
Make the second set of score lines on your first panel. Measure another 1 1/4 inches all around. Your panel will have two rectangular shapes and two separate score lines. Do not cut. Repeat with your second panel.
Making the Gift Box Extension Flaps
-
6
Place your ruler at your first 1 1/4 inch marking. Measure 2 1/2 inches from each corner and mark. Cut the four corners. You will have two extending outer flaps.
-
7
Place your ruler on your second 1 1/4 inch marking. Measure 1 1/4 inches from each corner and mark. Cut the next four corners. You will have two extending side flaps. Your outer corners will also have a mini boxlike extension.
-
8
Mark the box extension diagonally. Two triangles will appear within the box extension. Your marking will eventually fold inward at each corner of your box to complete the folds.
Creating Your Gift Box
-
9
Score the first set of score lines and fold over. Do not perforate the lines too deeply. Crease your lines enough that you will be able to fold over the flaps easily. Repeat with your next panel.
-
10
Apply a few drops of your craft glue at the center of each flap. Fold over and glue the four extending flaps. Make sure you do not glue the flaps corner to corner. You will not be able to fold over the corners to secure your box. Let dry.
If you are working with heavy cardboard or card stock, place a heavy object, such as books, onto the flaps until they dry. Your boxlike extension as well as the diagonal marking will be exposed.
-
11
Score and fold the diagonal marking. Fold the four corners inward. It will appear as if it formed a mini half triangle. This will help your outer flaps to fold over in the next step.
-
12
Fold the side flaps upward. Fold the mini triangles inward. Fold the outer flaps upward, however, the unglued corners will have to fold over the triangle inserts to secure the box in place. Your gift box's depth will be approximately 1 1/4 inches. Repeat the folds with your second panel. You will have a top and bottom. Your gift box is complete and ready-to-wrap.
