How to Refill Deskjet Ink Cartridges

Refilling the ink cartridges of an HP Desket inkjet printer has two main purposes. The most immediate purpose for most companies or individuals is saving money. Instead of spending anywhere between $20 and $50 for each replacement cartridge for the Deskjet, a cartridge can be refilled for half, or sometimes even a third of that cost. The other main purpose is to eliminate the waste of regularly throwing cartridges away, which is beneficial for the environment.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain the HP Deskjet ink cartridge refill kit made specifically for your model of cartridge. Most cartridge refill kits are the same, but some do differ slightly. The proper cartridge refill kit comes with everything you need to refill your HP Deskjet, including ink, a syringe and needle, and a snap & fill attachment.

    • 2

Refill the cartridge as soon as it starts to run low on ink. An empty cartridge sometimes dries out and clogs, making a refill less successful.

    • 3

Insert the needle into the hole on the syringe, pushing it into the syringe until is it firmly attached. Place the tip of the needle into the ink jar and pull back on the plunger of the syringe to fill the syringe tube with ink. Fill the syringe tube until it is filled to the 25 cc mark.

    • 4

Take the needle out of the syringe. Twist the smaller end of the snap & fill attachment into the end of the syringe to lock it in place.

    • 5

Turn the HP Deskjet ink cartridge upside down on a covered surface and insert the snap & fill attachment into the hole on the bottom of the HP Deskjet cartridge. Press the plunger to inject the ink into the cartridge. If ink sprays back at you, pull back slightly on the plunger and then push the plunger forward again until it is empty.

    • 6

Pull back on the plunger until you have drawn it back to level with 10cc on the tube. No ink should return to the plunger, but the air should be removed from the Deskjet cartridge, creating a seal to keep the ink from dripping out.

    • 7

Remove the snap & fill attachment from the hole on the Deskjet cartridge and turn the cartridge over on the covered surface so that the fill hole is on the bottom. Allow the cartridge to sit for five minutes or so to ensure that it is not linking before returning it to your Deskjet printer. If the cartridge does show signs of leaking, insert the snap & fill attachment again and pull back on the plunger to remove more air.

    • 8

Wipe the print head off gently with a paper towel to clean it when the cartridge has stopped leaking. Return the cartridge to the Desktjet printer.
