How to Prevent Glass Window Breakage

One of the most stressful parts of home ownership is worrying about the potential damage from intruders, accidents and natural disasters such as hurricanes or tornadoes. Powerful storms can not only break glass, they can also send debris flying into your home. It's important that you take precautionary measures to prevent glass window breakage for the safety of your family and the good of your home.

Things You'll Need

• Shutters
• Security window protection film
• Duct tape
• Plywood panels
• Window clips

Instructions

1. Install shutters outside all your windows. For the best results, you should be able to close them from inside. Shut and lock your shutters before storms to protect your windows. This is a good step to take to prevent break-ins when you're away on vacation, also.

2. Buy and install protective glass film on the exterior of your windows. This durable, thin and clear plastic film can prevent flying objects, rain and wind from cracking or shattering your glass windows.

3. Cut thick strips of duct tape and stick them on the inside of each window pane in large "X" shapes. If something does crack the glass, the duct tape will prevent it from shattering completely.

4. Place plywood sheets outside your windows and hold them in place with window clips. Window clips protect the glass from heavy rain and airborne debris without the need for nails or screws.
