Temporarily Stop Mail Delivery

If you plan to be out of town for a few days, you can temporarily stop mail delivery. The United States Postal Service's website has a form that you can fill out to stop mail delivery for 3 to 30 days. It takes only a few minutes to complete.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the USPS website. Under "All Products and Services" click "Put Your Mail on Hold."

    • 2

Enter your ZIP code in the "Create a Request" box and click "Go."

    • 3

Enter your name, address, and phone number in the form. Read the Privacy Act Statement and click "Continue."

    • 4

Enter the date you want to begin your hold. You must also choose from the following two options: "Post Office delivers accumulated mail," or "I will pick up accumulated mail" (from the Post Office). Click "Continue."

    • 5

On the next page, enter the date you want delivery to resume. Click "Continue."

    • 6

On the final page, verify that your information is correct and click "Yes." Once you put through the request, you will receive a confirmation code. Make sure to save this as you will need it to make any subsequent changes to your Hold request.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want mail delivery resumed at a different time than what you stated in your stop delivery request, you can modify your request at the USPS website.
