How to Remove the Protection Password on a Dell Hard Drive

Unlock your Dell by removing the protection password.

Removing the protection password on your Dell hard drive is a simple process provided you know the password in the first place. This will allow you to bypass the password prompt when turning on your computer, but makes the machine more vulnerable to theft or misuse. Note that for obvious reasons, Dell computers will not allow you to simply bypass a required password, so if you have lost or forgotten your password you will need to take the machine in for professional service.

Instructions

1. Turn on or restart your computer.

2. Press the F2 button repeatedly when the computer begins booting, until you see a system setup screen known as BIOS setup. This allows you to change basic system functions without fully logging into Windows.

3. Scroll to and select "Security" from the left-hand menu. Note that the mouse does not work in BIOS setup, so you will have to use your keyboard's arrow keys. Press the right arrow to display the "Security" menu.

4. Select "Internal HD PW" and click the right arrow.

5. Delete the old password. Leave the "New Password" field blank. Hit "Enter."

6. Hit your "Escape" key twice to go to the BIOS exit screen. Save the changes you made.

7. Restart your computer.
