Directions to Crochet a Newborn Baby Hat

Directions to Crochet a Newborn Baby Hat thumbnail
A hand-made baby hat will be a special memento for the mother.

A hand-crocheted hat will be the perfect gift for a new baby--personal yet practical. It is imperative that babies' heads are kept warm, and a cozy crocheted hat is the perfect thing, working much better than those thin caps they give you at the hospital. Even if you've never crocheted a hat before, the process is simple, using only basic stitches and techniques. If you're an advanced crocheter, you can make creative changes to personalize the pattern even more.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Check your gauge by working the first three rounds of the pattern. The hat diameter at this point should measure 3 to 3 1/2 inches. If yours turns out smaller or larger, find a different size of hook. Keep making samples until your gauge is correct.

    • 2

Work the first four rounds. This forms the crown of the hat.

Round 1: chain 3, 6 single crochet in third chain from hook, slip stitch in top of beginning chain (6 single crochet).
Round 2: chain 3, 2 double crochet in each double crochet around, slip stitch in top of beginning chain (12 double crochet).
Round 3: chain 3, 2 double crochet in each double crochet around, slip stitch in top of beginning chain (24 double crochet).
Round 4: chain 3, *2 double crochet in next double crochet, double crochet in next double crochet* around, slip stitch in top of beginning chain (36 double crochet).

    • 3

Work the remaining six rows. This creates the side of the hat.

Rounds 5-10: chain 3, double crochet in each double crochet around, slip stitch in top of beginning chain (36 double crochet).

    • 4

Tie off the yarn, cut it, and weave the tail into the last row. Embellish with a purchased pom-pom if desired. Do not use beads or sequins when making a newborn hat.

Tips & Warnings

  • To make a striped hat, change yarn colors every two rows, or use a variegated yarn.

  • Make sure you check your gauge before beginning this project. A gauge that is too loose or too tight will result in a hat that does not fit.
