How to Apply for Top Secret Clearance

Applying for "Top Secret" clearance with the United States government is an extremely difficult and time-consuming process that is only offered to those who have a "need to know" classified information. "Top Secret" clearance allows you access to many of the government's national security files and privileged information. Applying for this clearance level is something that should only be done under the proper circumstances.

      Obtain a position with the United States government that works closely with various cases of national security. This job can come from a number of different government sectors including finance, homeland security, air and traffic security and monetary policy. Work your way up in the organization and gain experience in different national securities issues and policies.

      Request a security clearance from the FBI and allow them to perform a background check including a complete credit history. Fill out forms SF-86 and FD-258 and answer all of the questions with accurate information. If you successfully pass the background check and have the proper credentials, you will be asked to sign a confidentiality agreement. You will now have "Secret" clearance within the U.S. government.

      Apply for "Top Secret" clearance by allowing the FBI to delve further into your background and perform an even more thorough background check than was required for the "Secret" level. The background check for "Top Secret" clearance covers a 10-year time period to ensure that there were no illegal or suspicious activities in your past. If you pass the background check, you will be eligible for "Top Secret" clearance.
