How to Make a Fake Car Alarm With Flashing LED

How to Make a Fake Car Alarm With Flashing LED thumbnail
Car alarms can be a good anti-theft deterrent.

Would-be car thieves are sometimes scared away by the flashing light of a car alarm. You can make a fake car alarm that will look like the real thing and encourage the would-be thief to go away. Only a few parts from an electronics store and a little bit of electronic skill is needed, as is an hour or two of your time. The flashing LED light of your fake car alarm will be indistinguishable from the real thing.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a page of a newspaper down on a table and put the cell phone battery on top of the newspaper.

    • 2

Use a utility knife to separate the front and back casing from the cell phone battery. Discard the battery and circuit boards that are inside of the back casing.

    • 3

Use the utility knife to make a small hole in the front casing. Insert the head of the LED into the hole from the inside of the front casing. Apply hot glue around the hole to seat the LED into position inside of the front casing. Let the glue set.

    • 4

Use wire cutters to cut two 6-foot lengths of electric wire. Use wire strippers to remove the insulation from both ends of the two wires.

    • 5

Solder the end of one wire to one of the two conductive pins attached to the LED. Solder the end of the other wire to the other conductive pin of the LED. Let the solder cool.

    • 6

Use a utility knife to make a small hole in the back casing of the cell phone battery.

    • 7

Run the two wires through the hole in the back casing. Put the front and back casing of the cell phone battery back together. Apply hot glue around the battery casing. Let the glue set.

    • 8

Solder the free end of one of the two wires to the positive contact of the 9-volt battery snap. Solder the free end of the other wire to the negative contact of the 9-volt battery snap. Let the solder cool.

    • 9

Attach a 9-volt battery to the 9-volt battery snap. Attach a piece of double-sided cellophane tape to the back casing of the cell phone battery.

    • 10

Stick the cell phone battery to the dashboard of the car. Hide the 9-volt battery snap underneath the driver's seat.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place the LED so that it can be easily seen by anyone looking into the car.

  • There is no guarantee that a thief will be discouraged by seeing what appears to be a car alarm.
