How to File for a Tax Extension in the State of North Carolina

How to File for a Tax Extension in the State of North Carolina thumbnail
North Carolina will grant a filing extension to taxpayers who request one.

The state of North Carolina offers a free, automatic tax filing extension to anyone who files from D-410 before the tax filing deadline, typically April 15. The extension grants taxpayers an additional six months to complete their tax returns. However, you do not receive an extension for paying your taxes so you should estimate your tax liability and make a payment of your estimated taxes. The North Carolina Department of Revenue allows you to file the form D-410 either online or by mailing it in.

Instructions

    • 1

Estimate your North Carolina tax liability as best as you can based on the information you have. Although you are not required to make any payments when you file form D-410, if you owe money you will start accruing interest and penalties because the extension is only for filing your tax return, not paying your tax bill.

    • 2

Go to the North Carolina Department of Revenue website to file the form D-410 online. You will need your Social Security number (and your spouse's if you file a joint return), your address, email address and, if you are going to make a payment, either your bank account information or your credit card information.

    • 3

Go to the North Carolina Department of Revenue's personalized form creator for the D-410 form if you do not want to submit your personal information online. When you enter your information, it will be put into a form D-410 so that you you can print the form and mail it in rather than submitting your personal information online.

    • 4

Print a blank form D-410 if you prefer to hand-write your information into the form D-410.

    • 5

Mail your form D-410 by April 15th to:
      North Carolina Department of Revenue
      P.O. Box 25000
      Raleigh, NC 27640-0635

      .

Tips & Warnings
