1
Determine the type of chat line you would like to start. Some are more complicated than others. For example, some chat lines invite people to join a room and talk. Others allow subscribers to set up their own voice-mail greeting to send and receive messages.
-
2
Choose a target market for your chat line. You will save money and advertising costs if you know the type of people you are looking for. For example, you may want to start a chat line for a particular political group.

3
Consider legally establishing your business as a LLC or corporation, allowing you to enjoy tax write-offs and protection of your personal assets if you are sued. Contact your attorney or certified public accountant to establish a corporation.
-
4
Research and select a telephone company that offers chat lines. Some companies will handle the entire setup and process payments.
-
5
Contact your local bank to open a merchant account if the telephone company you select does not collect payments from your customers. Merchant accounts allow you to accept credit cards and checks.
-
6
Advertise your chat line by purchasing radio or television commercial airtime or placing ads in your local newspaper. Consider creating a web site as well. You can hire a web site designer from sites like "getafreelancer.com."
