How to Sterilize the Membranes on a Medela Pump

Babies can be fed breast milk directly or by using a pump.

Washing and sterilizing the individual parts of a Medela breast pump is important for maintaining the cleanliness of the pump and, consequently, the safety of the milk that is pumped. Every part of the breast pump that comes into contact with the milk should be washed thoroughly after each use, including the small white Medela membranes and valves.

Things You'll Need

• Sauce pan
• Dish soap

Instructions

1. Detach the membranes from the breast pump valves prior to cleaning by gently pulling the membrane from the valve.

2. Place the membranes in a pot of boiling water for 10 minutes prior to using the breast pump for the first time. All other breast pump parts that come into contact with the milk must also be sterilized. After the initial sterilization, the membranes can be washed in hot, soapy water after each use. There is no need to sterilize the parts daily.

3. Snap the membranes back onto the valves after they are clean and dry. When properly attached, the membrane will lie completely flat on the valve.

Tips & Warnings

• For daily sterilization, Medela sells Quick Clean Micro-Steam bags. After being washed, parts can be microwaved in the micro-steam bag for a few minutes. According to Medela, each bag can be used as many as 10 times before needing to be replaced.
