Instructions on How to Install an Intel Q9550 CPU
Installing a new central processing unit (CPU) into your computer can give your system increased performance and extra speed. As software programs become more sophisticated, it can also become necessary to use a new CPU simply to keep up with the technology curve. Removing the current processing unit and replacing it with an Intel Core 2 Q9550 CPU is a fairly quick process, but it does require some technical know-how.
Instructions

1
Power off your computer and then disconnect the power cable from the back of the case. Remove all of the remaining cables and devices that are attached to the computer.
-
2
Move the computer case onto its side for easier access to the side panel. Check the back edge of the case to determine which type of locking mechanism the side panel uses, such as case screws, latches or a thumbscrew.
-
-
3
Remove the case screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver, twist off the plastic thumbscrew or press in the release latches. Lift the side panel off the case. Depending on the specific model of your computer, the panel may lock into place at 90 degrees or you may be able to remove the panel entirely.
-
4
Find the existing CPU and the attached fan and heat sink assembly, which is usually located at the center of the motherboard. Unplug the cable connecting the cooling fan to the motherboard.
-
5
Snap back the plastic latches holding the cooling fan and heat sink to the existing CPU. Pull the fan and heat sink assembly off the CPU and set it outside of the computer case. Do not touch the bottom of the heat sink to avoid contaminating it with the oils in your skin.
-
6
Lift up the plastic locking arm located below the existing CPU. Pull the CPU directly upward gently to avoid bending the pins on the motherboard socket.
-
7
Place the Intel Q9550 CPU over the pins on the motherboard socket. Push the CPU down gently and then push down the plastic locking arm. Place the cooling fan and heat sink on top of the new CPU.
-
8
Snap the plastic latches back into place and then reconnect the cooling fan's cable. Reconnect the side panel and plug in the computer's cables.

Tips & Warnings
The Intel Q9550 CPU connects to an LGA 775 motherboard socket, which is also occasionally referred to as a "Socket T" port. Before purchasing the CPU, check your computer's manual to ensure it has the correct type of motherboard socket.
It is imperative that you ground yourself prior to touching the Intel Q9550 processor or you could potentially damage the CPU through the discharge of static electricity. Grounding yourself only requires touching the metal tabs on the back end of the computer case for a few moments.
