How to Change the Depth of Field With a Pentax K100D

When taking a photograph, the depth of field is the level of sharpness of the area surrounding the main focus of the shot. With a large depth of field, objects in the foreground and background remain sharp. Foreground and background images are blurred with a small depth of field. The Pentax K100D allows you to adjust the aperture, which changes the depth of field.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the "Power" switch to the "On" position. The power switch is on the top, right side of the camera, around the shutter button.

    • 2

Twist the "Mode" dial on the upper left side of the camera to the "Av" position. The camera is now in "Aperture Priority" mode. If you look at the LCD information screen on the right of the camera, you will see the current aperture setting.

    • 3

Rotate the "e-dial" to the right to increase the depth of field and to the left to decrease the depth of field. The "e-dial" is on the right side of the camera above the navigation buttons. You can monitor the change on the LCD information screen.

Check the depth of field by turning the "Power" switch to the circular symbol. The depth of field will appear in the viewfinder.

    • 5

Take your picture by pressing the shutter button.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the lens you are using with the Pentax K100D has an aperture ring, press down on the lens auto-lock button and rotate the ring to the "A" setting. This will keep the lens from interfering with your aperture adjustments.
