How to Indicate a Real Coach Purse

Examine the bag to make sure it is real.

Coach handbags are highly coveted for their high-quality materials and design. They are also expensive and therefore not easily acquired. This has opened up the black market for fake bags, some of which are very difficult to differentiate from the real thing. Some of the best fakes are made in Asia and sold in the U.S. through websites like eBay. Before you purchase a real Coach bag online, inquire about the seller's return policy. If the seller doesn't allow returns you may want to deal with a seller who does. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Check the "C" logo on the bag. A real bag will have Cs that match up on the seams as mirror images of each other. A fake bag will have Cs that are mismatched and staggered on the seams. Look closely to see if your Cs are in fact Cs. Some fake logos are actually Gs, printed to look more like the "C" of the Coach brand.

Check the dust bag. Each new, authentic Coach purse comes with a dust bag. The dust bag is chocolate brown with a red drawstring, and has "COACH EST. 1941" printed at the bottom right in white letters.

    • 3

Check the zipper. The letters "YKK" are engraved on the zipper pull of real Coach bags to indicate the zipper company.

    • 4

Examine the stitching. The stitching on the bag should be perfectly aligned with the seams and curves of the bag. There will not be any loose threads or crooked stitches on the real thing.

    • 5

Look for the serial number. Not all Coach purses have the serial number, but most do. Look at the leather tag inside the bag. You should see a number and letter code. The last four numbers are the style of the bag; some fakes will falsify this tag and number. To be sure yours is real, contact Coach and ask about the style number. The serial number should be straight and even. If it is crooked, you bag is probably a fake.

Look for plastic on the handles. Fakes are usually transported with plastic casing on the handles. If someone on eBbay pictures a bag with plastic on the handles and says it's real, look for another bag. A real bag will not have any plastic casing on it.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are still unsure after examining you bag, take it to a Coach retailer. Coach representatives should be able to tell you is the bag is real by its weight, feel and look.
