How to Take Long Exposures With a Pentax IST DL

The Pentax IST DL has an exposure compensation for most camera shooting modes, which allows the user to lengthen or shorten the exposure time. Long exposure time is often used when the camera is used in low-light shooting conditions, such as when indoors or at night. Other users prefer to lighten their photographs with the longer exposure. Set the Pentax IST DL with a longer exposure time as needed for your photographs.

Instructions

1. Turn on the Pentax IST DL by turning the "Power" switch to the "On" position.

2. Switch the "Mode" dial to any of the shooting modes except for "M" or "B." The exposure is automatically set by the camera in "M" or "B" modes.

3. Press the "AV" button on the top of the camera and rotate the "e-dial" to the right to increase the exposure. The "e-dial" is located above the navigation buttons on the back of the camera. The exposure value will change on the LCD information screen as you rotate the dial. The shortest exposure is "-2" and the longest is "+2."

4. Take the picture by pointing the camera at the subject and pressing the shutter button.
