How to Forward E-Mails to a Cell Phone

Keep emails concise when sending to a cell phone to avoid additional charges.

BlackBerry devices and iPhones aren't the only phones capable of receiving email on the go. Any phone capable of receiving SMS text messages can receive email. A properly sent email will arrive in the cell phone user's SMS inbox just as any text message. The only caveat is that you must know the recipient's cellular provider and the email must fit within the constraints of an SMS.

Instructions

1. Ask the recipient, if someone other than yourself, what cellular provider they use. This is key for ensuring the forwarded email arrives on their cell phone.

2. Determine the proper domain name for the carrier. AT&T, for example, is @txt.att.net. The proper domain for Verizon is @vtext.com. See the Resources section of this article for an extensive list of carriers.

3. Begin forwarding the email as you would any other. In the "To:" field, enter the recipient's 10-digit cell phone number followed by the proper domain determined in the previous step.

4. Click "Send" to forward the email to the device. Keep in mind that SMS messages can only handle 160 characters. If the email is longer than that, the message will broken into multiple text messages, for which the user may be charged.
