The HP Compaq nx9010 Business Notebook was designed to support several different types of optical drives. The fixed optical drive options available for this model include a DVD+RW drive, a DVD/CD-RW combo drive, a DVD drive and a CD drive. With the proper software and the right part, any one of these devices can be installed into your laptop. If your optical device has failed and you wish to replace it, don't worry. Instructions

  1. Removing the keyboard cover and keyboard

    • 1

Unplug the AC power source from your laptop and remove the battery. Never work on a computer that still has power. Doing so can damage the computer and can also result in potentially serious injury.

    • 2

Close the laptop and remove the two screws that secure the keyboard cover to the hinges. These screws can be located at the back of the hinges. Set the screws aside and make a note as to where they must go in the reassembly process.

    • 3

Open the monitor and lay it flat to expose the keyboard cover and hinges.

    • 4

Gently insert the flat-blade screwdriver near the right end of the keyboard cover and pry slightly upward. Repeat this process with the middle of the cover and then the left end of the cover. Note: the keyboard cover is only the part at the top of the keyboard. Do not attempt to pry the main body casing apart, as this will only damage the casing.

    • 5

Lift the keyboard cover up slightly and then disconnect the speaker cable located in the center of the cover. This will completely free the keyboard cover. Set it aside.

    • 6

Remove the four screws located at the top of the keyboard and set them aside.

    • 7

Gently lift the top edge of the keyboard up approximately 1 inch and then pull slightly toward the monitor to free the tabs at the bottom of the keyboard. Note: the keyboard is still connected to the motherboard. Do not pull the keyboard completely away yet or you will risk damaging the motherboard cable.

    • 8

Turn the keyboard over and lay it so the keys are resting on the touchpad of the laptop.

    • 9

Disconnect the motherboard cable from the motherboard port. You can now set the keyboard aside.

Removing the existing optical disk drive

    • 10

Remove the two screws securing the optical drive to the motherboard. These screws are located in the center of the main body where the keyboard had previously covered. Set these screws aside.

    • 11

Insert your finger into the opening in the main body and push on the optical drive to disconnect the drive from the motherboard.

    • 12

Remove the optical drive and set it aside.

    • 13

Insert the new drive and reverse the steps listed here in order to reassemble your laptop.
