When your 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan begins to stall or starts hard, you may have a failing starter. If your dashboard warning lights do not remain lit when the van stalls, that is a good indication that the starter is the source of the problem. The starter is at the base of the engine compartment on the Grand Caravan, and is accessed from beneath the van. Purchase a new starter from an auto parts retailer or Dodge dealership.

Things You Will Need:

  • Wrench set
  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Socket and ratchet set

1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery

Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Use a wrench to remove the cable, then position the cable where it will not contact the battery terminal. Lift your van, using a jack, and position it on a set of jack stands to support it while you work.

2. Pull the heat shield clip free from the heat shield

Pull the heat shield clip free from the heat shield on the side of the starter. Remove the nut and two mounting bolts from the starter, supporting the starter body. Due to the starter’s position in the Grand Caravan, support it to avoid dropping the starter motor.

3. Pull the starter free of the engine compartment

Pull the starter free of the engine compartment and disconnect the wiring harness and electrical connections. The connectors will pull free by hand.

4. Connect the wiring harness and electrical connections

Connect the wiring harness and electrical connections to the new starter by pushing them into place. Mount the starter motor and secure it with the mounting bolts and the nut. Tighten the bolts with a socket and ratchet.

5. Press the heat shield clip back into place on the new starter

Press the heat shield clip back into place on the new starter. Raise the vehicle to remove the jack stands. Lower the van to the ground and reconnect the negative battery cable with a wrench. Test the function of the starter to be sure it is operating properly.
