Homemade Styling Gel
Make your own hair gel to save money. Commercial hair gels contain chemicals and preservatives that can damage the hair. When you make your own homemade styling gel, you can customize it with the addition of essential oils and other natural ingredients. Homemade hair gels are non-toxic and do not leave residue in your hair. The hair gel stores well in an airtight container in your refrigerator, and you can alter the thickness of the gel to suit your tastes. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 1 box unflavored gelatin
- Bowl
- 2 cups warm water
- Essential oil (optional)
- 1 tsp. aloe vera gel (optional)
- Rosemary oil (optional)
- Airtight container with lid
- Saucepan
- 2 tbsp. flax seed
- Sieve or cheesecloth
Instructions

Unflavored Gelatin Styling Gel

Place ½ tsp. of unflavored gelatin into a bowl.

Add 1 cup of warm water to the bowl. Stir until the gelatin dissolves.

Keep adding more unflavored gelatin. Add ½ tsp. of gelatin at a time to reach your desired thickness.

Customize the hair gel. Add 3 to 4 drops of scented essential oil to add a pleasant smell, add 1 tsp. of aloe vera gel to make the gel moisturizing or add 4 to 5 drops of rosemary oil to help preserve the gel.

Pour the hair styling gel into an airtight container. Place a lid on the container, and keep it stored in your refrigerator. Discard the hair gel once it begins to form a crust.
Flaxseed Styling Gel

Pour 1 cup of water in a saucepan. Bring the water to a full boil.

Add 2 tbsp. of flax seed to the water.

Turn the heat down to simmer the water and flax seeds.

Remove the saucepan from the heat. Allow the gel to set for 30 minutes.

Strain the gel through a sieve or cheesecloth to remove the seeds. Pour the gel into an airtight container. Store the hair gel in the refrigerator.

You can purchase flax seed at most health food stores.
