How to Write an Analysis Book Report
A plain old book report includes a summary of the book and recaps the major events that took place. An analysis book report, however, analyzes a more specific aspect of the book. Depending on the book, your analysis may focus on the symbolism of a certain character or object, or the underlying meaning of a relationship or decision. There are often many layers in any book that you can uncover in your analysis book report.

1
Prewrite an outline. Decide what you are going to analyze and discuss in your book report. Write down significant quotes you want to use in the body of your report as well as the major points you want to make in your paper.
-
2
Write a draft of your thesis statement. Your thesis statement is a sentence or two that will state a more narrow focus of what you are going to discuss in your report. Your thesis could be a theme you saw throughout the book that you will analyze or a particular argument that you are going to prove.

3
Write your rough draft. Start with an introduction paragraph that provides background information that the reader will need to follow your analysis and includes your thesis. Consider organization and the clarity of your main points throughout the body paragraphs.
-
4
Use paraphrasing and direct quotes from the book to prove your major points. Don't forget to cite any ideas that are not your own. Be sure to use the quotes in the right context. Explain why you have used each quote and how it helps to analyze the book.
-
5
Write a conclusion that sums up your main points and revisits your thesis. You may want to leave your reader with a new way to analyze the book, or you may want to bring up a new point about the larger meaning of the book.
-
6
Revise and edit your first draft. Give yourself time between finishing the draft and revising the report so you have a fresh look at your material. First, edit the big-picture items first such as content and organization. Then move onto sentence structure, grammar and punctuation.
