How to Seal Bronze Statues

How to Seal Bronze Statues thumbnail
Properly cared for bronze statues can last centuries.

Although some art dealers and art supply companies advertise products specifically made to seal bronze statues, they often contain extra chemicals and scents that can harm the delicate patina, or finish, on your bronze sculpture. Bronze sculptures should be sealed with a basic carnauba wax. If sealed properly, the wax will prevent your sculpture from oxidizing, turning green and rusting. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the bronze statue with a little soap in a slightly damp cloth. Be careful to never over-wet the sculpture as this can cause damage to its finish. If the sculpture has crevices that are difficult to reach, lightly brush away grime with a soft toothbrush. Rinse the soap off of the sculpture with clear water.

    • 2

Use a clean paintbrush to cover the bronze statue with wax after the sculpture has dried. Place wax in all of the crevices and wrinkles of the piece. Try to use a clear wax so that it will not change the appearance of your statue. Only use carnauba waxes because they provide a tougher finish that will protect your sculpture from rust longer.

    • 3

Melt the wax with a hairdryer. This should only take a few minutes and will allow the wax to penetrate the deep crevices of the sculpture where it is more prone to rusting and oxidation.

    • 4

Rub down the entire statue with a soft, clean cloth once the melted wax is dry. You can also use a soft, clean toothbrush to carefully rub any crevices.

Tips & Warnings

  • Indoor sculptures should be sealed at least every year whole outdoor sculptures may need to be sealed every month if you live in an area with a lot of precipitation or humidity.

  • Avoid using soaps or waxes with scents or too many chemicals as they can affect the finish of your sculpture.

  • If you are sealing your statue under the hot sun, you may not need a hairdryer to melt the wax.

  • If your statue is placed outdoors you may want to apply a second coat of wax.

  • Don't use any chemicals or strippers on your bronze statue as they will remove the finish.
