How to Know Which RAM to Purchase
One of the easiest and least expensive ways to improve the performance of a computer is to install more random access memory (RAM). Increasing the amount of RAM helps the computer run faster and perform more tasks simultaneously. Since the type of RAM used varies with the brand and model of computer, purchasing the correct memory module can be difficult. Fortunately, most online memory resellers have guides for selecting compatible RAM for your computer.

Check to see how much RAM is currently installed in your computer. For Windows computers, right-click on the "My Computer" or "Computer" icon on the desktop and select "Properties." The amount of memory installed will be listed on the "General" tab of the "System Properties" window. For Macintosh computers, select "About This Mac" from the "Apple" menu. The amount of memory installed will be listed in the window that opens.

Open a web browser and navigate to the Crucial or Kingston Technology website.

Select the brand of your computer in the "Select Manufacturer" drop-down menu.

Choose the appropriate model line of your computer from the list provided.

Choose the model of your computer to see a list of compatible RAM modules. Also review the maximum amount and configuration of RAM modules specific to your computer model.

Check the box your computer came in if you are unsure of your computer model.
The Crucial website also has a system scanner tool that can be installed on your computer to help determine the type and amount of memory your computer needs.
