Hello, miss. Or is it sir?

Many species of snails are hermaphrodites, meaning they have male and female reproductive organs. Some species, such as the apple snail, have separate sexes. Determining the sex of a snail requires careful observation and a hands-on approach.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the snail on its back and wait until it emerges from its shell.

    • 2

Locate the snail's mantle cavity. Observe where the edge of the shell and the snail's main body meet. A thin layer of the snail's main body wall folds over to create the mantle cavity.

    • 3

Search for a small sheath-like structure located in the upper part of the right mantle cavity. A male snail will possess a fairly large penis sheath. The female will not.

Tips & Warnings

  • The sex of a snail can also be determined by observing mating habits. When snails mate, the male snail will slide on top of the female's shell.
