How to Copyright an Article Online
Writing articles for online use is one of the most ideal ways to make money from home. By writing only a few hours a day, some writers can even earn a full time income. As the Internet grows, there are those who will take advantage of good articles found online and claim them as their own. If you decide to write for online use, you will need to protect your work.

1
Create your articles in your word processing program. At the top of each article add your name, the date and your contact information. Save the article into a text file and then email it to yourself as an attachment. This will give your article an electronic date stamp that proves exactly when you wrote the article.

2
Print out a copy of your article and have it notarized by a notary public. This is one method that, though costly, will stand up in court. This is ideal for longer, more valuable pieces that might be prone to plagiarism.

Print out your article and mail a copy of it to your own home. Make a note on the back of the envelope as to the name of the article. Once you receive it in the mail, let it remain unopened and place it in a file. You will now have a date-stamped copy of your article in your home file.
This method, however, will not hold up in a court of law unless you have the letter delivered by certified mail. If you decide to do this, you must ask for a signature receipt after you sign for the letter. Staple the signature receipt to the envelope and file it away.

Tips & Warnings
Most plagiarism cases never go to court. As long as you have clear proof of ownership, you can usually write to the owner of the website where your article appears and have them remove your article.
If the website owner refuses to remove the article, you can usually have the article removed by notifying their web hosting company of the theft.
