Windows XP features a special installation feature called the "Repair Installation." This installation replaces all of the system files on your Dell computer while leaving your data intact. This repair process is best saved for situations where you can't get your Dell computer to work any other way, but you don't want to lose your data in a regular reinstallation of the operating system.

      Insert your installation CD into your Dell computer and restart the machine. As the computer boots up, press F12 to enter the boot menu, then choose the option to boot from the CD.

      Press "Enter" at the setup menu, then press F8 to agree to the license terms and conditions.

      Press "Enter" and then select the Windows installation you wish to repair using the arrows keys, and then hit "R." The automated repair installation process will begin. Do not interrupt it or you may damage the file system.
