Create links in Open Office Writer to send the readers to other documents.

Create links in Open Office Writer to direct readers to other documents and websites. Links allow you to create anchor text to explain the link, without showing the address of the link itself. Links to Web pages within a document are called hyperlinks. Links can also be created to open some types of emails. You can create as many links as you need within a single Writer document.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a new or existing Open Office Writer document.

    • 2

Highlight the text that you want to become a link. You can highlight text by left clicking with your mouse and dragging the mouse from the first to the last letter of the text.

    • 3

Click the "Hyperlink" button on the toolbar. This looks like a globe with a chain link on it.

    • 4

Type the Web address in the "Target" box to link to a website. Choose any further settings. If you did not highlight text previously, type the anchor text, or name of the link, in the "Text" box. Press "Apply" to save changes.

    • 5

Clicking "Mail & News," "Document" or "New Document" on the left side of the hyperlink, to link to another Writer document or email. Press the "Open File" button, which looks like a folder, next to the "Path" box. Browse to the email or document's location. For new documents, choose a file location and file type. Choose "Apply" to save changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always use anchor text to name Web sites. These fit into documents more naturally than a Web address. For instance, "Visit Amazon to buy this movie" looks better than "Visit http://www.amazon.com to buy this movie."

  • Always double check that links work after creation. A single error in the Web address or path name will cause the link to not work. Click on the link to test it.
