How to Set up a Portable Room Divider

You've just moved in to your beautiful new home. One of your favorite things about it is the huge dining/living space. When you first viewed it, it seemed to have such spectacular potential. But now that you've moved in, you are finding it difficult to know exactly how to use all that uninterrupted space. In fact, it makes you feel a little lost. A portable room divider is a terrific solution. Its portability lends flexibility as to when and where to place it. For example, you might position it one way for children's activities, shift it for a card party or remove it altogether to receive lots of guests. You can buy more than one and mix-and-match them. Best of all, portable room dividers are easy to set up. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Unfold the portable divider. Typically portable room dividers are folded into three or more sections. Open it until it reaches its maximum length.

    • 2

Position the room divider. Place the divider so that it will divide the two areas adequately. Consider how the divider will impact lighting or foot traffic from one section of the room to the next. Do not place the divider in such a way that friends or family will continually bump into it.

    • 3

Angle the divider at the joints to balance it. Most room dividers require that you bend the joints at least slightly, for the sake of balance. (If your divider has wheels, you do not have to bend it at all.) You can choose a slight angle, such as 20 degrees, or an angle of nearly 70 degrees, according to your needs. You can fold the divider zigzag-style, or create a concave, elongated C-shape, folding the end panels in toward the center of the divider. Extend the divider to its maximum for greater delineation. For a more open feel, shorten the divider by folding it into deeper angles.

Tips & Warnings

  • Play with different divider angles and formations to encourage intimacy, increase the feeling of separation or maintain a more open feeling.

  • Portable room dividers can be dangerous! If your divider topples over, depending upon its weight, it can be hazardous, especially to children and small animals. Be sure it is adequately balanced at all times.
