Taking apart a snowmobile clutch is an important process to learn for any snowmobile owner and can save a significant amount of money on labor and installation costs. Snowmobile clutches are important in that they control the shifting of gears while the vehicle is in motion. Without a properly working clutch, you risk serious injury to anyone riding the bike and everyone in the immediate vicinity. While taking a snowmobile clutch apart may sound like a difficult task, it is actually quite simple with the proper instructions.

Things You'll Need

  • Snowmobile
  • 12 point 1/2 inch socket
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Clutch puller

Instructions

      Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the belt guard on the outside of the bike. With the belt guard removed, use your screwdriver to remove the drive belt and the plug from the belly pan of the vehicle.

      Continue by removing the bolt and lock washer that secures the drive clutch to the crankshafts using an adjustable socket wrench. Adjust the wrench so that it tightly grips each part as you remove it from the bike.

      Insert the clutch puller into the clutch by inserting the rod until it attaches itself into the inside of the piece. Use your 12 point 1/2 inch socket and tighten the puller until the clutch releases from the crankshaft. Pull on the clutch puller to remove the the pieces of the clutch one at a time.
