Microsoft Paint is a simple imaging program that's included with all Microsoft operating systems. Paint, while limited, offers a free way to edit photos. These photos can be saved in Windows Bitmap, .jpeg, .gif, .png and .tiff formats for print and online use. You can crop and add drawings and text to your photos with Paint. Paint for Windows 7 offers many features not available in previous versions and is used for the steps below.

Instructions

  1. Crop

    • 1

      Click "Start," then "All Programs," "Accessories" and "Paint" from the pop-up menu.

      Press the "Paint" button on the top menu bar in Microsoft Paint. Click "Open" from the drop-down menu, select your photo from your computer files and select "Open."

      Click on the "Home" tab in the top menu bar, then press "Select".

      Click the mouse on your photo and drag it until you have selected the area you wish to keep. Release the mouse and press "Crop" in the "Home" menu.

    Draw

      Open the image you wish to edit.

      Click on the "Home" tab in the top menu bar. Select the "Tools" group and choose the "Pencil," "Brush" or "Line" tool.

      Select the "Size" option and choose a pencil, brush or line width.

      Click on the "Colors" group. Press "Color 1" and select a color.

      Left-click and drag your mouse to create drawings or lines on your photo.

    Text

      Open the photo you wish to add text to.

      Click on the "Home" tab on the top menu bar, select "Tools" and then the "Text" tool.

      Click your mouse on the photo where you wish to add text.

      Select the "Text Tools" tab and click on the "Text" button. Click to open the "Font" group and choose your desired font, size and features.

      Press the "Colors" group button and click on "Color 1" and select a text color.

      Type in your text.
