How to Refill Lexmark 28 Ink Cartridges
The Lexmark 28 and 28A black cartridges utilize superior inkjet technology: their ink nozzles are oriented in pairs so that if one nozzle clogs, its mate will continue to function. It's a great cartridge, but unfortunately not all Lexmark 28 cartridges are refillable. The 28A cartridge can be reused, but the 28 cartridge cannot--even if you fill it with black ink, your printer will receive an "empty" message from the cartridge that cannot be hacked. So make sure you have the Lexmark 28A cartridge before you undergo the following steps.
Things You'll Need
- Plastic sheet or barrier
- Inkjet refill kit
- Inkjet ink for Lexmark printers
- Clear tape

1
Remove the 28A cartridge from your Lexmark printer, taking care not to touch the electrical contacts or the area where the ink comes out. Orient the cartridge label-side-up with the print facing you, on a plastic barrier to contain spills. Remove the label from the top of the cartridge.

2
Locate an existing hole in the top left of the cartridge, along the furthest side away from you. If necessary, increase the hole diameter with the finger drill from your refill kit to accommodate the syringe needle. Fill the syringe with about 15 ml of black ink. Insert the end of the needle into the hole. Slowly inject ink inside while gently wiggling the needle up and down. Do not overfill or excess ink will run out of the ink nozzles.

Put the label back into position, and tape it down. Wait an hour or two for all the ink to settle inside the cartridge. Reinstall the 28A cartridge in your Lexmark printer and print a test page. Run several cleaning cycles if necessary.
