RAM and hard disk space are both forms of memory.

RAM (random access memory) and hard disk space are essential to your computer's performance. Some games and programs have minimum requirements when it comes to RAM and hard disk space. The space on your computer's hard disk determines how much data can fit on your PC at any given time. If you need to check the available memory on your Windows XP computer, you can do so in just a few easy steps.

Instructions

  1. Checking RAM

    • 1

Click the "Start" button on the desktop taskbar.

    • 2

      Click "Control Panel."

    • 3

Click "System." If the icon isn't there, click "Switch to Class View" to make it appear.

    • 4

Click the "General" tab on the "System Properties" menu to see your PC's RAM listed near the bottom.

    Checking Hard Disk Space

    • 5

Click the "Start" button on the desktop taskbar.

    • 6

      Click "My Computer."

    • 7

Right-click the "C:" drive of your computer, and select "Properties." This opens the "Properties" menu for your computer's hard disk. The total capacity, free space and used space on the drive is listed here, along with a pie graph of the available and used space on your computer's hard disk.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your computer lacks the hard disk space and RAM needed to run or save a program, you can upgrade your computer. Speak to an expert for more information on upgrading RAM or installing a new hard disk.

  • External hard disks are also available, expanding your PC's memory without the hassle of taking apart your PC.
