Use your TI-83 calculator to solve rational equations.

The TI-83 graphical calculator, made by Texas Instruments, is a powerful tool used by students and professionals alike. It can be used to solve a myriad of different equation types, including rational equations. Using its graphical capability, you can even plot out a graphical representation of the equation on the screen. See how to solve rational equations using the example x/(x+2) = 8/(x+4).

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your calculator and hit the blue "Y=" button.

    • 2

Enter the first half of the equation into Y1. In this example, the first half of the equation would be "x/(x+2)".

    • 3

Enter the second half of the equation into Y2. Use the arrow buttons to tab between fields. In this example, the second half of the equation would be "8/(x+4)". Press "ENTER."

    • 4

Press "2nd +Trace" and select option number 5, "INTERECT." The solution to the equation is demonstrated by the x-values at the intersection points shown at the bottom of the screen.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use the ZOOM settings to ensure you have the best view of the intersection point. Select the "ZOOM" key and then press the corresponding number for either zoom in, or zoom out. This will return you to the graph screen. Using the arrow keys, move the cursor to the point at which you wish to zoom in or out and then press "ENTER."
