How to Paint Cars for Advertising

How to Paint Cars for Advertising thumbnail
Use a car to advertise.

Businesses always look for innovative and creative ways to draw attention to their products. Some companies advertise by placing graphic directly on a private car. Company cars with the company's logo have been on the roads for decades, but more and more, businesses have begun to "rent" cars, paying the car owners handsomely to drive around with the company's message blazing loudly and clearly for all to see. This method offers a win-win proposition for the company, which can advertise for a small investment, and the car owner, who receives payment for doing almost nothing.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand down the area of the car where the advertisement will display. Sand with 500 grit sand paper to scuff the area to ensure that the new advertising paint will adhere.

    • 2

Cover the car surface surrounding the advertisement area with open plastic garbage bags. Secure the garbage bags with tape. Also cover the tires.

    • 3

Spray white automotive primer over the advertisement area of the car. You can purchase the primer in spray cans from an automotive supply store or an automotive center. Completely cover the area with the primer. Spray on one primer coat and let it dry. Sand the area where the primer dried.

    • 4

Spray backdrop paint color on the design area. The painter may use two tones, side by side. Cover the area with the backdrop paint color completely. Allow the paint to dry in between each coat of backdrop spray paint. Repeat this three to four times, always waiting until each coat of background paint dries before spraying on the next coat. Experts recommend water-based non-toxic paint because it produces a nice shiny finish. Purchase spray cans of non-toxic water-based backdrop paints at an automotive supply shop or an auto center.

    • 5

Sketch the advertising graphic design on the backdrop color with a pencil. Use acrylic paint and a foam brush to paint the advertising graphic over the sketch. An alternative involves working from a stencil of the advertising graphic design. The company needs to supply the desired stencil so that the advertisement appears as they wish.

    • 6

Create airbrush designs for the advertisement using an airbrush.

    • 7

Add details to the advertising graphic design with a paint marker. Hobby shops carry paint markers.

    • 8

Spray a clear coat of urethane paint over the whole advertising graphic design to protect it. Wait at least two days after completing the advertising graphic design to allow the design to fully dry before spraying on the clearcoat urethane paint.

Tips & Warnings

  • Paint in a temperature-controlled garage or paint booth that prevents dust and other particles from circulating and sticking to wet paint. Keep the temperature at 55 degrees F or higher. Humidity prevents urethane paint from drying properly, so paint on non-humid days.
