If your Hewlett-Packard Deskjet 6980 printer gives you a message that ink is low or you simply want to check the levels manually, you can reset the ink level to double-check that the printer is giving you an accurate readout on the remaining ink. If you learn you are running low on ink, you will need to get a new cartridge.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your printer and turn it back on. Make sure it is connected to your PC.

    • 2

Open the "Control Panel" from the "Start" menu and select "Printer and Faxes."

    • 3

Right-click the Deskjet 6980 icon and select "Properties" from the list that pops up.

    • 4

Go to the "Services" tab and click "Service This Device."

    • 5

Click the "Estimated Ink Level" tab. This will have been re-calculated when you restarted your printer in Step 1.

    • 6

If you are running out of ink, you can refill your ink to full capacity by purchasing new cartridges at an office supply store. Be sure your ink level is really low using the steps above though; printers often display premature ink warnings in a desire to sell more ink.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do need to purchase new cartridges, it is a good idea to bring along the old ones with you to the store. There are many different types of printer inks and it is easy to accidentally get the wrong one.
