Nearly every wilderness area in the country requires a permit for an overnight stay. Going through some red tape helps you avoid later problems with land management agencies.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Plan ahead. Research the trip you want to take, and find out what wilderness agency manages the land: the National Park Service (NPS), U.S. Forest Service (USFS), Bureau of Land Management (BLM) or a state park.

  2. Step 2

Know what trailhead you'll use, where you'll camp and for how many nights, when you'll return, and whether or not you plan to make a campfire.

  3. Step 3

Have an alternate plan in case the trail you want to use is booked.

  4. Step 4

Do a Web search for the name of the wilderness area you'd like to visit. Find the Web page that lets you apply online for your wilderness permit, and fill out the permit application. You'll have to pay; fees vary.

Tips & Warnings
  • Apply for a permit well ahead of time, as there are limits on most areas. Permits are handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Try to avoid peak use times - summer weekends are the worst.
  • If you have any condition that would impair or limit your ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity. This information is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment.
